Can't import a used car into Thailand?

Is there any truth to the rumour that you can no longer import used cars into Thailand?

Yes there is - but it only applies to motorcycles, sedans, pick-ups and vehicles that carry more than seven passengers.

Apparently it's designed to make the roads safer.........not sure how that's going to work though!!

Doesn't that cover pretty much every car on the road?!

Agreed that banning imported cars won't make the roads any safer, but anything to try and reduce the number of motorbikes on the road has got to be a good thing!

Not sure it will make a huge difference though as it won't ban all the ones that are already imported..... Perhaps they should make the motorbike licence laws stricter - i often wonder if any of the drivers who dart around have actually ever taken a test.....

Although this has been approved by the cabinet it can still take years for the new law to come into force ... if it ever does at all!
